How to Crochet a Simple Edging on a DishCloth Tutorial (Video)...

Hi Friends!!!  I made another tutorial video to show how I crochet a simple edging onto dishcloths.  I used dishcloths I had previously crocheted, but you could use any dishcloth that you have.  That video can be found here.  And if you want to see my original tutorial video on how to crochet the actual dishcloths it can be found here

You can add an edging in a contrasting color, similar color, or the same color.  The options are endless.  I do recommend you use similar weight yarn for the edging so that they will wash well. And I also suggest you use all cotton yarn for this project. My favorite yarn to use is this yarn from Amazon (affiliate link).

And if you do take the time to crochet a few dishcloths, consider blessing a friend with one.   They make wonderful gifts!  I love to give them to friends here and there throughout the year.  They also make great house-warming, hostess, and Christmas gifts.  Just a couple ideas for you!!

I have received so many lovely comments from you all about how much you have enjoyed my tutorial videos. And I really appreciate that!  I only create these videos as an act of love for you all so I am glad you find them helpful!!!  Feel free to share them with others too!!  I would really appreciate that!! And always feel free to ask me any questions or show me your beautiful creations.  I love hearing from you all!!!

I hope you have a lovely day!!!

Keep stitching!!!

How to Make Elderberry Syrup...

Have you ever made elderberry syrup? It really is super simple to make and tastes pretty amazing!!! I think you should try it!!! Yes, I realize this is predominately a sewing blog, but we need to maintain our health and immunity so we can sew more!  Right? That's my plan anyway! So let's jump right in!

Elderberries (Sambucus Nigra) are deep purple berries that are known for their history with boosting the immune system and treating colds, flus, and other viral infections.  I also like to add rose hips to my elderberry syrup because they are high in vitamin C.  You could also add other things, like cloves, ginger, cinnamon, etc.  I personally prefer the combination of elderberries and rose hips.

I like to make elderberry syrup a few times a year to have on hand for my family.  We take it as a prevention over the winter months, and we also take it a bit more often if we do find that we are feeling under the weather.

I would like to share my recipe with you all today.

Here are the ingredients that I use:

1 cup elderberries, dried

1/2 cup rose hips, dried (optional, but I like them)

2 cups water

Local honey (amount explained below)

Let's get started:

Measure your dried elderberries and rose hips into a medium-sized pan. Add in the water and bring to a slow boil.  Turn down the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring gently here and there.

Using a fine strainer, strain out the plant materials, collecting the liquid in a clean container.  (I collect it in a glass measuring cup.)  Then measure how much of the liquid elderberry-rose hip liquid you have.  Measure out the same amount of honey and stir it into the elderberry-rose hip liquid.

Pour your syrup into a jar with a tight-fitting lid, store in the refrigerator, and use the syrup within the next three months.  Also make sure to label your jar with the contents and the date you made it.

To use for prevention:

Children take 1 tsp. daily

Adults take 1 T. daily

To use when ill with a viral infection:

Children take 1 tsp. several times daily

Adults take 1 T. several times daily

Some misc. random thoughts:

*This is a cross post from my Cindy Johnson Homeopathy website.  It can be found here if you are interested in following me for health and homeopathy.

*A good friend of mine pours some of her syrup into ice cube trays and freezes them before putting them into a container and storing in the freezer.  She said this way she always has some available and she can quickly thaw out a cube or two in the refrigerator.  I am definitely going to try this!

*Dried elderberries and rose hips can be purchased from your local herb shop.  If you don't have a local herb shop to support, you can also purchase online.

*Also please make sure to use local honey. It really makes a difference!

*I am not a medical doctor and the information I share is solely for educational purposes.  Please consult your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about using this elderberry syrup.

Cute and Charming Make-up Case...

How was your Christmas this year?  I do hope it was lovely and relaxing!!!  That is usually my goal!!!

This year I only made one handmade Christmas gift!  That's kind of shocking for me.  I used to make a lot of my gifts each year.  But this year, with so many other things going on in my family, I decided to keep it simple and keep our focus on the birth of our Savior!!!  I am so glad I did!  This left the week before Christmas wide open to bake treats, hand deliver them to our neighbors and church family, work on puzzles, watch Christmas movies, etc.  It was a delightful week indeed!!!

I want to tell you about the one gift I did make.  It was a supplement to a gift for one of my daughters.  I bought her several pieces of L'BRI makeup and I wanted to have a cute case to put them in.  I pulled out one of my favorite books and found a fun pattern I have made before.  I also dug through my fabric stash and tried to find fabrics that my daughter would like.  I came up with a floral, a gingham, some scrap batting, and a fresh zipper!!!  I love the combination of florals and ginghams!!! Do you?

I was pleased with how charming this little make-up case turned out.  And even better than that, my daughter is thrilled with it!!!

Did you sew any of your gifts this year?  I'd love to hear about them!

Happy Stitching, Friends!

Cotton Dishcloths - 31 Days of Creating...

I make these cotton dishcloths whenever I have a few minutes of time here and there. They are quick and simple to make. I keep a basket with all the supplies, as well as the ones I have finished. We use them daily at our house and we often give them as gifts. I love how colorful they are!!!

Do you have something you like to make and share with others?

A Fast and Easy Christmas Dress......

I have a friend that has a precious 2 year old daughter.  I wanted to make something for her but I knew it had to be fast and easy considering how close we are to Thanksgiving and Christmas.  So I turned to the Madeline dress pattern by my friend Samantha of The Handmade Dress.  I used a piece of fabric that had been in my stash for a few years.  I always thought I would make my Elisabeth a jumper out of it.....but she doesn't care much for jumpers anymore.  So I thought it would be perfect for this cute dress.  And honestly, I probably made this dress from start to finish in just 2 hours.  I can't tell you how many of these dresses I have made over the years.  I used to even make my girls Christmas nightgowns with this pattern.  Oh, and halloween costumes too!  This was one of my favorites...Pippi Longstocking!!!  Do you have a favorite pattern that you use over and over???

Happy Stitching!!!

How to Make a Gift Card Ornament......

I had a gift card that I needed to somehow package for a friend.  I pondered putting the gift card in with their Christmas card but ultimately I decided to stitch a quick gift card holder.  I put the gift card down on a piece of blue felt and traced around the card leaving about a quarter of an inch on the two long sides and one short side.  I then cut a second piece the same dimensions but about a quarter of an inch shorter.  My two pieces were 3 1/2" x 2 3/4" and 3 1/4" x 2 3/4" and should work for any standard-sized gift cards.

Before I stitched the two pieces together, I took the slightly smaller piece and hand stitched a triangular piece of green felt onto it.  I used green embroidery floss to stitch the tree using a quick running stitch.  Then I used red and white floss to create the ornaments making simple french knots.  I used brown floss to make the trunk using bullions.  And likewise, using yellow floss, I created a five-pointed star on the top using bullions.  Next I put the two blue felt pieces together, matching up three sides, and using blue floss ran a quick running stitch around those three sides.  And finally, I stitched on a looped white ribbon so the card and holder could be hung on the tree.  I'm just thinking that even if you don't have a gift card to package you could put cash in the holder too.

I've made several of these over the years but I think this one worked up the fastest and I liked it the most. Stitching for family and friends is so fun this time of year!! I hope you consider stitching one this Christmas!  And if you do, I would love to see it!!!

Happy Stitching, Friends!!!
