I know a few people that are about to have babies. I have a tender heart for sweet fresh babies....therefore I have a few gifts to make. First up - this fun and colorful choo-choo train quilt.
I purchased some of this fun fabric to make Ethan a quillow. (It is a quilt and then it folds up to create a pillow when not in use.) Then I went back and picked up some more fabric for this baby quilt. Ethan loves this quilt and the couple times we've been back to the quilt store he seeks the fabric out and carries the bolt around the store saying "oo-oo." You know, baby-talk for "choo-choo." Too cute!!!
This quilt pattern is my absolute favorite to make up for a baby. It is fast and fun to put together plus it utilizes large pieces of fabric that may not look so great cut up into tiny pieces. I made one of these quilts for Elisabeth before she was born, but it has sheeps on it - not trains. It is also the perfect size for a sweet little one. We found that whenever we went out and about away from home, instead of worrying about a coat, we would just wrap our babies up in their quilt. Not to mention, it's the perfect size to put down on the floor or bed for naptime. Can you tell I love baby quilts?
So now instead of making Ethan a quillow, I think I am going to make him a quilt like this one but with more blocks so that it will be bigger. I've already made him one quilt, but he loves this quilt and pretty soon it will be given to another sweet little baby boy.
I love the polka dots on the back side too. I was able to wash the fabric, cut, piece, quilt, etc... all in under a week, with just five minutes to work on it here and there. Did I mention that I love this quilt? The pattern I used is from the book "Even More Quilts For Baby" by Ursula Reikes. Great book!!!! I have made many of the designs in the book....some for babies and some for big people, with just more blocks added. Plus I use the book as a reference all the time. Emily made a great pillow to match....I will post it when I remember to take a picture. Lots of projects going on....can't wait to share them.....

The quilt is adorable, Cindy! And I love the "oo-oo" story. =)
I love quillows. I first found out about them 10 years ago. they are so neat, and don't take a lot of room.
I'm sure the kids love the quilts because you made them, you just can't do better than home-made love.
I have been reading your blog for some time and wanted you to know that after reading this post I found the book at the library and liked it so much that I asked for a copy for Valentine's Day. I have made two baby quilts from the book so far and am cutting out another one right now.
I have also been inspired to be more adventuresome with machine quilting after reading about your daughter's success with her first quilt.
I appreciate your blog and enjoy reading about your family and your sewing projects.
If I ever have a little granddaughter to sew for I plan to purchase your skort pattern.
Blessings.

Becka...thanks so much!!! I am so glad you have enjoyed this book....I love it and refer to it often still. Some quilt books are just too overwhelming for me...but this one is perfect. Thanks for your kind words they are greatly appreciated!!!
