I Used to Smock.......

...but I haven't in quite some time....a couple years to be honest. Ruth asked me a few days back if I knew how to smock. I do, and I really enjoy the smocking part....but not the pleating part. However, maybe I should think about smocking the girls some Easter dresses this year. Seems like I recall Easter being in April this year.....that may be enough time for me to complete two smocked dresses.

The dress above was Emily's Easter dress from several years back. I saw a similar dress in a Creative Needle magazine and was determined to make it. I think it came out pretty well. Over the years I have made about five or so smocked dresses...but this one is still my favorite. I really need to preserve these sweet dresses so they will last for future generations. Elisabeth went through a phase where all she wanted to do was wear the smocked dresses in her closet....you know, the ones that really should be put away in safe keeping by now. And the thing is, she wanted to wear them to do all of her normal little girl activities.....such as: finger painting , riding bikes, eating toast with jelly, etc...... I guess I should prioritize my "To Do" list this week and get these dresses put away the proper way.

LOL...my daughter used to LIVE in a black velvet dress!! Now it's the "Laura Ingalls" dress I made her for her Halloween party. Just think how fun it will be to tell your Granddaughter--see I told you Mommy not to eat ...in this dress!!!

The dress is beautiful! You inspire me to dig out my pleater and start a smocked dress for my Emily.

Maybe we can motivate each other along. :-)

What a beautiful dress! I've wanted to try smocking, but thought it would be vary complicated. I'm inspired by your dress, so maybe I'll try it soon.

I still love that dress. I remember when you first smocked it. It still looks great today.

Gorgeous. I love smocking, and found a how-to book at the thrift store about 5 or so years ago. It does look difficult, so I have yet to attempt it.
My girls like to wear their favorite dress, everday, for everthing as well.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Lisa...my Emily still wears her colonial girl dress all the time. Actually she has it on today with the hat and apron as well. Yes, these are quite some memories being made to share with the grandchildren.

Ruth....you dig out your pleater and I'll dig out mine. I enjoy the smocking part....just not the pleating part....not sure why. So I definitely need some motivation.

Elaine and Roberta....smocking books can be very intimidating. I generally teach myself whatever I want to learn about through books...but I just couldn't "crack" the code with smocking until I saw a friend smocking. Within 30 seconds I figured it out....no lie. Maybe there are some websites with videos for smocking instruction. I'm not sure...but I know there are for knitting purposes.

Missy...your words are always so encouraging...I always look forward to hearing from you.
