I Found Buttons......

I was surprised that I had such a difficult time locating buttons to match this royal blue jumper. But I did find some and they have been attached to Emily's latest jumper. I find it interesting that a few years ago it would have taken me weeks, if not months, to complete a project like this with little children running around. And now, with another sweet little baby even,....this same project takes me a couple days. Maybe I am just so sleep deprived that I figure a little more deprivation won't hurt anything or anyone.

This jumper is made from a royal blue corduroy and I lined it with a nice colorful fabric. It is the same fabric I used to line Ethan's short jumper a few months ago. These two fabrics were completely Emily's choice and I think they turned out great....once again.

Speaking of Emily, she started her first quilting project earlier tonight. She is starting with a small baby-size quilt that she can use with her baby dolls. Hopefully in a few days we can take a picture of her progress.

Elisabeth has not forgotten that she wants to sew a jumper for her Elizabeth doll. She also has decided she wants to sew some clothes for her doll house family. They remind me of clothespin dolls so that request should not be too difficult.

I am almost finished with a quilt I've been working on for a long time. It was my local quilt store's block of the month quilt for 2005. I just have to finish the binding and then I'm done. I would love to get to it later tonight....but we'll just have to see. Of course, I still have three other quilts I am working on, and the new block of month for 2007 starts tomorrow.

Yesterday the children and I went out and met Wayne for lunch...that is pretty common once or twice a week. The uncommon part was that we each had something on that I had handmade. Wayne had his scarf on. Emily had her red jumper on. Elisabeth had her blue jumper on. Ethan had his red knitted vest on. And I had my favorite blue skirt on. Too bad I did not have a camera with us.

I am hoping that teaching these skills to my children will create an appetite in them to do the same with their children. I just listened in on a telephone seminar tonight hosted by Marilyn Moll of The Urban Homemaker. Her guests were Rebekah Wilson of Hope Chest Legacy and Ruth Sundeen of Hope Chest Society and they were discussing this very thing.....passing on the lost arts of needlework and preparing hope chests for our children. These skills are very dear to my heart!!!

Emily sure does have a good eye for coordinating fabrics. I know that you are creating memories that will last by doing crafts with your children. As parents, they will want to re-create those memories with their own children.

You're on the right track with teaching your children those lost-arts. Of my three older daughters, only one does not enjoy sewing, but that's just her bent (I did try to teach her!).

We started a tradition with our daughters of giving them a Lane hope chest on their 18th birthday. My 3rd daughter just turned 17 and will get hers next December.

You know, your next project should be learning to smock if you don't already know how. When I look back to when my children were all little, I'm amazed at all the sewing I completed, smocked dresses included. I used to dress my girls in jumpers like you do. Keep up the good work with your children...the years fly by all too quickly!

Sorry about this comment being so disjointed.

Missy,

Yes, Emily does do a great job with coordinating fabrics. I love to sit back and see what she comes up with. And we love to do crafts....I sure hope they will want to re-create them with their children. Once again, I try to sit back and follow their lead instead of pushing them into anything.

Ruth,

When I graduated from high school all I wanted was a Lane hopechest. Fortunately, my family purchased one for me and I have treasured it all these years. I have started boxes (actual hope chests will come later) for each child that I place special things into....like special baby outfits, special artwork, baby shoes, etc. I want to continue to add lots of items through the years....such as favorite family recipes, special books, home made items, etc.

Fortunately, I do know how to smock and have many dresses that I made for Emily when she was younger. I have yet to make any since Elisabeth has been born (and she's four now)....maybe that should be one of my next projects. I will post some pictures one day. Have you kept the dresses you made your girls over the years??? I probably should preserve ours somehow. Elisabeth likes to wear them all the time.....I guess I really should put them away.
