Have Fabric.....Will Smock!

I made a big purchase, as well as a big committment, yesterday. I went into the local heirloom store in search of two patterns for Easter frocks......and I came out with the above purchases (minus the one pattern that I already had). Last time I made Easter outfits it was for two children. I always give myself the Easter after a new baby is born "off." So last year it was store bought outfits from Strasburg......but this year it's time to get busy and make these children some Easter finery!!!!

I will be smocking two dresses and making a pair of short-alls and a matching shirt - with piping for Ethan. I've only made piping once before.....so be forewarned.

I am ready to have something completed. I've been working on quilting the Double Irish Chain....but it is s...l...o...w.... going. I might have to dig out a quick project for some short-term gratification.

Tomorrow is our annual Valentine's Tea. The girls and I look forward to doing this each year. So after dinner tonight we will be making cookies!!!!

What a funny coincidence---I just bought the same pattern (if it's Ellen McCarn's Basic Yoke), and I bought pink pima gingham. I have not decided on the smocking plate yet. Your outfits are going to be beautiful, and I can't wait to see your progress. I have not begun yet.

Btw, are you quilting your Irish chain by machine? An allover pattern or something else? How are you handling the quilt while you do it? I have a king size quilt that I can't afford to take somewhere to be quilted, and I'm afraid to tackle it with my sewing machine.

I know that you'll do fine with the outfits. I've seen a lot of your work over the years, and it's all turned out beautifully. I think everyone is entitled to time off after adding yet another child to their routine. It only keeps you sane!

I hope the girls have a wonderful Valentine's tea today!

Hi Ruth,

Congrat's on that sweet new grandbaby. I took a peep at him, and he is beautiful!!!! I'm sure Jessica is glowing!!!

About the pattern, I do have the Basic Yoke pattern....but the one I just purchased to use is her Bishop pattern. I already had the smaller size...but needed the larger size for my Emily. I haven't started yet either. I still have to trace off all the patterns before I can begin. I'm not even sure where to start! I can't wait to see your sweet dress. The past dresses you have made and posted are gorgeous!!!!

As for the Irish Chain quilt....yes, I am machine quilting it. I am quilting it in the (what I believe to be) traditional Irish Chain way.....diagonal quilting lines and then free motion quilting in the large white blocks. I have not started the free motion part though. I will say that this twin size is hard to manuever through the machine. I inquired about having it done on a long-arm....but they would not quilt it the way I wanted. They would only do the all-over design and I really wanted the traditional quilting. Good luck with your king size quilt. I do have a great book on machine quilting. I'll find the author and let you know.

Missy,

Thanks for your kind words as always. And yes, the girls had a great tea party. It's amazing how much fun they can have with such a small amount of prep time from me.
