Earlier today the girls made their favorite candy canes. It doesn't matter that our tree is already full of them....we have to make them every year. We use basic pipe cleaners (cut in half) and the tri-sided beads. Elisabeth is very particular about her color pattern and you could hear her chanting, "white, green, red." Emily was more interested in exploring different patterns with each of hers.
During other times of the year, the girls love to string pony beads onto pipe cleaners. Elisabeth can spend hours doing this. After she is finished she admires her work for awhile and then we slide the beads off the pipe cleaners and back into their containers until next time. This little activity is especially entertaining for her while I am cooking dinner.
Here are their finished candy canes from today. They already have placed them carefully onto the tree. I am quite confident tomorrow they will once again be in the candy cane making business.

those look like lots of fun. i bet the children enjoyed it
How do you finish the ends so that the beads don't come off? Glue gun?
Ruth
Thanks for all the kind comments.
Ruth...as for the ends...before we start I bend a small "kink" in one end to keep the beads from falling off. Then once they are finished, I bend the pipe cleaner back over the last couple of beads on each end to secure them and keep the beads from falling off. I am sure a glue gun would would as well though. Does that make sense???
We have lots of homemade ornaments. The kids love to do snowflakes with lots and lots and lots of glitter. this year we added gingerbread men and houses to the mix. Lots of fun.
thats a cool idea!
