Ethan "Hand Sews".......

Ethan (my four year old) doesn't like to be left out of anything. And he hears me talking about sewing and hand sewing quite often. So this morning he came to me with a handful of felt scraps and yarn. He told me he was ready to "hand sew" and that all he needed was a needle. I promptly found him a needle that would accommodate the yarn, yet still work with the felt and he was as content as could be.

His sister, Emily, has been knitting leg warmers for herself for ballet this Fall and he must have tuned in on that because when he finished he told me he had made "leg covers" for Ean.

Hi - I am a follower on your blog, and I have a 5 year old daughter who wants to learn how to sew. i am a beginner myself, but I am unsure how to teach her. Could you recommend a certain size or type of needle and a way to go about teaching her. Thanks so much!

Thanks Kristie...we look forward to seeing you and your family too!!!

craftmom....For Ethan I just used a tapestry needle. It has a blunt point but yet the eye was large enough to accommodate the yarn and still go through the felt with no problems. You could draw or trace a basic shape on a piece of felt (i.e., heart, star, etc) and then give your daughter a blunt-tipped needle with yarn (and a knot in the end) and let her stitch on the lines of the shape. Or just ask her what she'd like to do. Sometimes my kids have better ideas than me and if it is their idea they will enjoy it more and spend more time on it. Just some thoughts for you.

Thank you so much! She wants to make felt food, so thank you. I am going to get a tapestry needle, and some felt for her. Thanks again! I love your blog!

craftmom....instead of yarn you could use embroidery floss. That might go through the felt even better than yarn. Just an idea for you. Felt food sounds like a lot of fun for her!!!
