New Outfit for Emily......

Emily picked out the pattern and the fabrics for this summer outfit (above). I wasn't too sure about the fabrics...but I must say they have grown on me. I had to re-draft the capris or else I could have worn them....pregnant and all. However, I will say, Emily is very petite. I am just glad that I had a great high school sewing class. My teacher, Ms. Wallace, would be proud that I am actually measuring the body and the flat pattern before I begin these days. It has taken me a long time to get to this point. But I have to admit....she was right!!! It does make a big difference and saves a lot of time in the end. I guess that is why I enjoy pattern drafting....if you start with the correct measurements....it should fit in the end. Plus it provides a nice mental challenge for me. I would rather draft a pattern than alter a commercial pattern. Strange, huh??? I guess that goes along with the "I'd rather make a garment from scratch....than have to alter an existing garment."

I also constructed a skort out of the leftovers from the other outfit. I don't have a picture of the shorts underneath...but I will tell you they are hot pink/white gingham. Love them!!!!! I am still actively drafting out skort patterns in any spare time I can find. The instructions are all written, I just need to add pictures. It's all coming along!!!!

Our Smocking Guild is hosting a fantastic teacher this weekend and several of us are busy planning out all the details. That is mostly what I'll be doing this week....along with the weekly ballet class for Emily, our end of the year homeschooling meeting, an OB appt., etc...etc. But I really do hope to fit a trip to the local quilt shop in there somewhere.....not even 8 weeks left and no quilt even started for this sweet baby yet. I can hardly believe it myself. Also I want to work on a few little summer outfits for the baby. We'll see how much I can squeeze in!

I love both outfits. The fabric is darling. Your sweet girl is getting taller and thinner by the day. My little one is the same way.

And I agree about pattern drafting. I used to be that way and then got stuck with commercial patterns for so long. I am getting back to drafting and loving it!

I am excited about your skort pattern too!

I love the fabrics! Is Emily's top based on those pillowcase patterns? I woke up this morning thinking that I should make Squirt a top using a pillow case tutorial, but first I have to find one...

I also love the frills on both the top and the capris. Too cute!

I love the skort! You sew like my Mom, who was a clothing major at Purdue in the mid 50s and later took tailoring. [Sadly, no, I did not inherit those genes!!] I think it's so neat that you put aside your reservations and made the outfit up in the fabrics she choose--she looks VERY happy with it!

I made one of those tunic outfits tonight! I will try to post it in the next few days. It was a fun pattern to make and her fabric choices are so cute!

Thanks for all the sweet comments. You all are the best!!!

Karina and Ruth...yes, I really am pregnant and have been for almost 33 weeks now. We are very excited. Somehow I've managed to stay very busy making my girls clothes and have not mentioned the baby much. But hopefully I can get a few things made for him over the next few weeks.

Deborah...this pattern is by Indygo Junction. The top is just like a pillow case dress/top. If I come across a tutorial I will send it your way. It went together very quickly!

I worked with Norma Wallace for many years at OHS. She was very a very good home ec teacher. It is gratifying to know that she taught you so many things about sewing that you are and will continue to teach others.

yeah I like to draft patterns too. In Malaysia, there are no commercial patterns sell here,so everything we must make from scratch. From measuring to pattern drafting. But it sure guarantee to fit very nicely.

Very cute. I love the fabric. Where did you find it?

Linda..that is so neat that you were friends with Ms. Wallace. How come I don't remember you from OHS? Did our years overlap there? I graduated in 1986.

Farahana...thanks so much. That is great that you draft all your own patterns. I guess most people in your area do if you have no commercial patterns available. It is definitely a great skill to have.

Kristie....thanks. The fabric came from the little shop that I visited with you a few weeks back. She can sell the fabric off of an entire bolt in a matter of three days. Amazing!!! The moral of the story is...if you see fabric there that you like??? You get it right then and there...because next time it may all be gone!
