Spring Bishop.......

Here is Elisabeth's new Spring bishop dress with my own unique variation. I saw a dress like this in an old magazine...but unfortunately, I have never seen a pattern to support the design. So I did what any person that sews would do......I thought it through and made my own pattern. I love it....and so does Elisabeth. She wore it ALL day today!!!

She's been wanting to wear it since I finished it a few weeks back. However, I wanted to demonstrate the process at our Smocking Guild (SAGA) last night....so I wanted to make sure it didn't get dirty or damaged before then. The demonstration went very well and overall we had a great meeting.

And today I had a sweet little girl wearing a nice and bright dress. If I run out of time...I may use this dress for her Easter dress this year. Although, Easter is late this year....so I may have more time than I think. But I did buy a bunch of fabric last night for some casual Spring outfits. And in addition, one of my friends just had her baby girl 8 weeks early. So one of the baby gifts I was planning to make has just been put on fast forward. The baby is tiny....so today I cut out a preemie bishop gown that I hope to...once again....put my own spin on. Tonight I will pleat it....and tomorrow I will start smocking!!!! Happy sewing and smocking to you all!!!!

Gorgeous!! Both child and dress! Perfect for Easter! So what did you do - make a basic high yoke dress and attach a smocked collar?
I love it! :)

So, is the complete white collar independent of the dress? Rather, does the pink dress come all the way to the neck with the collar attached at the neck with the binding? Does it have a yoke as Cheryl says, or is it a basic biship gathered in at the neck?
No matter how it is done, it is lovely. I would never get another one done in time for Easter.
Thanks for sharing.

It's beautiful! Oh, come to my SAGA chapter and show us how to make it, too.

I'm enjoying your blog. Thanks!

Thanks for all the wonderfully positive comments. The dress is actually a bishop with the collar attached (not separate). It is not a yoke dress...but I have seen some yoke dresses with a bishop collar that look similar to this dress finished. Autumn....what SAGA chapter are you in? I'd love to visit SAGA chapters and share...but more than a few hours drive would be too far right now. But maybe in the future....who knows??? Shelly...I would have loved for you to be present too!!! We had a really nice time!!!

Hi Cindy...

Followed your link from the HMS email you sent today. I think I am coveting right now! I still have yet to learn to sew, and our youngest girl is age 10! I did make her a few dresses a couple years back, but they were not top notch. I really had no idea what I was doing. However, the seams did stay together - they just didn't look pretty.

Did you teach yourself to sew? If so, what resources truly helped you?

Blessings -
Camille

Camille....thanks for visiting and the sweet comment. I actually have been sewing for many years...but in the beginning I taught myself to sew by making doll clothes. The quickest way to learn would probably be to seek out someone in your family, community, or church that does sew and ask them to spend a little time with you just to show you the basics. Some people learn better by seeing than by reading. If that isn't an option, I would get sewing books from the library and read a little to learn the terminology and then pick up an inexpensive pattern and fabric and just try it. The more time you spend sewing the better you will get. You said you made a few dresses in the past...so you do have some experience. Just build on that experience by finding a pattern you really like (the more you like it the more desire you will have to work at it until you get it right) and then sew it up. I can try and answer any questions you may have...I don't mind at all.

Another thought for you....your 10 year old daughter could learn right along side of you if she has any interest. You could even pick up a kids sewing book and make a few projects out of it. Anytime I want to learn something new I first check out the kids books because they explain things very well and generally have some neat projects. Any questions?...let me know!!! I'll do my best to help!!
