New Baby Dress.....

I have taken so many pictures of this sweet dress....and I still can't get a good one. I think I need to spend more time perfecting my photography skills. I did take photography in high school...for about two weeks....and then I dropped it for advanced sewing instead. Go figure!!! For me...I guess it is one or the other...not both!!!

I modified a pattern to make this dress have a yoke the height that I wanted and I also modified the sleeves to make the puffiness the amount I wanted. I then crocheted around the neck, sleeves and across the front and back yoke. For the fabric I used 100% cotton batiste....which I really enjoyed working with. Then I had to decide what to embroider across the yoke. I found this design in a book and promptly stitched it on. I love to stitch bullion roses and lazy daisy leaves...but I can't always come up with original designs. I am working on that though. All in all.....I love this sweet little dress. I'm debating whether or not to make matching bloomers and/or a slip. Any thoughts???? The dress kind of matches the bonnet that I made for my bonnet class. Which, by the way, was a fantastic success. I had five precious ladies in attendance and we had 3 hours of non-stop fun. Everything went very smoothly and I am already looking forward to another opportunity to share my love of combining heirloom sewing with crochet edging.

Beautiful dress. I would do a slip! I loved making matching, special slips for Lu when she was a baby and toddler. I still pull them out and pet them sometimes. :)

Thanks Angie... I think a matching slip is a good idea too!!!

Very elegant dress for a baby..I wonder how did you do the crochet edging through the fabric. Did you poke a hole right into the fabric?

Farahana...thanks for your kind words. Actually I applied entredeux to the edge and then crocheted into the holes in the entredeux. Entredeux is usually sold where heirloom sewing supplies are sold. It is considered a trim.

Alright, thank you Cindy, I will definitely buy entredeux.

Cindy--what type of thread to you use for the crochet edging? The crochet thread I see at stores is always 100% cotton and it seems like it might shrink up and not lay flat after washing. Any tips?

Hi Amanda,

Yes, I do use the 100% cotton thread. On this dress I either used the 10 wt. or the 20 wt. thread. When I purchase the cotton thread I always look for one that has a sheen to it. It seems to also have a tighter twist than some of the other choices too. I haven't had any issues with garments after washing them. Good luck and enjoy!!!
